IBM Downsizing
Posted by Greg under General
The routine donwsizing first posted here was picked up by the mainstream press. The new detail is the line of work the employees were in:
The affected engineers are developing components for IBM’s line of BladeCenter servers–one of the company’s best-selling hardware products. Sales of BladeCenter systems, which feature a slimmed-down profile for ease of management and expandability, enjoyed a 35% year-over-year increase in IBM’s second quarter. During the same period, IBM’s hardware sales overall increased only 3%, according to the company’s second-quarter financial report.
And that the employees were given 30days to find a new position at the company.

the 30 days is too short and at the wrong part of the year.
You have to realize looking for work in November late in the year is not ideal. Typically in the business cycle of IBM there are the heaviest hiring freezes in November December.
In these actions a person becomes intelligible for ‘internal only’ considerations after being let go although there might be managers who like them and who’s jobs are frozen late in the year whose reqs will thaw out in January but it might be too late.
My experience is that even if you tell IBM managers you would relocate at your expense, if you have to move they don’t give much consideration and IBM rarely pays moving an living to internal employees

Then there are people like Maria Callas who works from Canada getting paid more then american counterparts who only costs IBM money by flying around at there expense and working and hour a day if IBM is lucky ! with workers like that no wonder they are outsourcing
