An interesting article posted in The Journal News about how IBM blogs. Most of this has been written about before - but it’s good to get another point of view on it.

Tags:No TagsWhen Christopher Barger started a blog almost three years ago, he wanted to write about something other than technology and business — topics that filled his days as an executive speechwriter at the Armonk headquarters of IBM Corp.
Barger, a 37-year-old Yonkers resident, wrote in his online journal about the Indianapolis Colts and trivia such as who was likely to be Time’s person of the year.
So, about a year ago, he was surprised to learn that his readers included some people he wasn’t counting on: his bosses.

Regardless of the genre, if the artist is having fun, usually I will too. I feel that way about blogging. If the blogger isn’t enjoying what they’re writing about, I probably won’t read for long or come back. A danger of blogging is to blog because your company wants you rather than because you enjoy it. In a past post IBMeye talked about an article mentioning internal blogging at IBM. It noted “So far, 16,416 people have registered (for blogs at IBM) and 2,291 have created active blogs.” So 1 in 7 blogs stays active. That probably mirrors the larger blogging universe, but it still shows that many of those internal bloggers don’t want to be doing it. Blogging should stay a “want to” rather than a “have to”.
