IBM is set to announce results for the fiscal first quarter on Tuesday after the closing bell. The Wall Street consensus calls for the computer hardware maker to report earnings of $1.94 per share on revenue of $24.48 billion. In the same period last year, IBM reported earnings of $1.81 per share on revenue of $27.67 billion. Standard & Poor’s Equity Research reiterated a “hold” on the stock today, after the company said the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission was upgrading an options expensing probe to formal status.

He added he expects “typical ups and downs” in the company’s report. While service bookings may disappoint some, he wrote, the stage is still set for improving growth in 2006.
Lehman Brothers expects the company to meet consensus estimates, but analyst Harry E. Blount wrote in a client note he also sees “an increasingly cloudy outlook for services bookings going forward.” Trends in certain servers as well as semiconductors appear “very solid,” he added.
